I started training in a shitty school gym at age 16, many dinner times were spent rushing to the gym to get changed and train with a few other like-minded lads on the crappy multi-gym (which is still there 12yrs on I have seen it!). The following year or two I joined gyms in Manchester with mates and I would go 2+ times a week with my sessions planned in a little book – that I half made up and half lifted from a magazine – and make my way through all the stuff I wanted to do. Now to link this back to the theme of the post. These early days of training were different to the following 6 0r so, WHY? Because I was training with others. Until the last 2 years I had chosen to go solo in training sessions because I never had anybody to push me! The number of times I stopped before I was actually finished due to lazy training partners quiting on me, dropping out, instead of pushing and challenging me! I’ve always been a motivated person when it comes to training so I always did ok and made progress. No matter how motivated you are, you still always that extra 5% you get from surrounding yourself with the right people!! The last few years I’ve found a lifting partner who pushes me and my gains recently are some of my best ever and I definitely attribute a lot of this to training in the right environment (my shed) with the right person (someone as mad as me). I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at FactoryBJJ in Reddish, I’m on the bottom rung of a ladder where there are loads of quality guys with far superior knowledge an skill to me, all with great work ethics, so how can I fail to improve? Train with people better than you! in whatever you choose to do!! By better I mean stronger, better cardio, more experienced, any aspect you can! It will advance you at a crazy rate!! And if by a stroke of real bad luck, you’re the best at everything! – find somebody more enthusiastic, happier, crazier anything which takes you to that next level!
